15-year-old creates stunning Stargate panorama out of LEGOs

When I was 15, the most I could make out of my LEGOs was a gun, and even then, you probably wouldn’t have been able to recognize it. Luckily, some 15-year-olds are a heck of a lot more talented than I was, like Sven Junga, who used LEGOs to create not only a spaceship—the Daedalus from Stargate Atlantis—but also an amazing diorama of the ship landing.

And it turns out that’s not the only sci-fi artifact re-created by Junga. Check out his Flickr feed for more of his awesome LEGO pics.

Big Finish Launches Second Season in May

Big Finish Productions is launching its second season of six Stargate SG-1 andStargate Atlantis audio dramas (three episodes each) this May, and the first episode is the SG-1 story entitled “First Prime” by James Swallow, the same writer who brought “Shell Game” (SG-1) and “Zero Point” (SGA) last season.

The CD for “First Prime” is now available for pre-order at the publisher’s website(USD $14.53 + $0.74 shipping) and will most likely be offered for download as well (last year, downloads cost USD $8.99).

Christopher Judge reprises his role as Teal’c and Doctor Who veteran Noel Clarke makes his Stargate debut as the Jaffa Sebe’t. Set during Season Five, the story’s tagline reads, “Teal’c’s past as First Prime of Apophis comes back to haunt him when Colonel O’Neill and Daniel Jackson are taken captive by the system lord’s forces. As Teal’c struggles to free them, he finds himself confronted by an old friend and fellow Jaffa, Sebe’t. Can this warrior really be trusted? Or has Teal’c reopened an old wound that can never be healed?”

The audio drama runs approximately 70 minutes and features an original music soundtrack.

Mallozzi Reveals a Few Atlantis Movie Plot Points

“When we were breaking Enemy at the Gate,” Mallozzi explained in order to set the stage, “we saw it as a very special episode, not because it would be our series finale (at the time, we were somewhat optimistic that we would get that sixth season pick-up), but because it was going to be our 100th episode. For that reason, it turned out to be a little different from past finales, less a cliffhanger and more of a coming full-circle that featured the star of the series: the city of Atlantis.

“It was also intended to be the launching point for a very interesting early season 6 scenario:

“With Atlantis back on Earth, why the hell would the I.O.A. ever let it go? And if it remained, which, by all indications seemed likely, what would become of its occupants, especially Ronon and Teyla?
“Also, with a permanent station in the Milky Way, wouldn‘t Atlantis, logically, cease to be a launch point for gate travel and, instead, become a research center for Ancient technology?”

The Season Six opening two-parter is now the first Stargate Atlantis movie, about which Mallozzi declared, “[W]e’ll be able to tell our story on a much bigger, visual effects-laden, character-centered canvas.” Shooting is expected to take place this summer for either a late 2009 or early 2010 release (the Sci Fi Channel is expected to premiere the movie before it will be released on DVD).

Major Davis to return for Atlantis finale

Major Paul Davis of the Pentagon will be paying a visit to the Pegasus Galaxy in the series finale of Stargate Atlantis. Little is known about the episode “Enemy at the Gate,” which is the one hundredth episode of Atlantis, but the title implies alot. Speculation is that it will involve the nemesis that will be introduced in the Season Five two-parter, “First Contact” and “The Lost Tribe.”

Actor Colin Cunningham declined comment on involvement in the episode, but did say that he would be “delighted and proud to continue on as Major Davis in the exceptional franchise that is Stargate.”

Stargate Magazine Issue 24 has been published

The September / October 2008 issue of Stargate Magazine is now on available! This issue is dedicated exclusively to Stargate Atlantis, this 100-page yearbook looks back over the past year of the TV series.

Issue #24 includes interviews with Joe Flanigan (“John Sheppard”), David Hewlett (“Rodney McKay”), Rachel Luttrell (“Teyla Emmagan”), Jason Momoa (“Ronon Dex”), Robert Picardo (“Richard Woolsey”) and Jewel Staite (“Jennifer Keller”) all discussing developments in Season Five of the series.

Among other features, Stargate Magazine pays special tribute to actor Don S. Davis, looks back on the ever-evolving city of the Ancients with a feature called “Then and Now,” makes a close examination on the Season Three episode “Sunday,” and updates readers with a new set report.

StarGate Atlantis Movie Green-Lighted

SCI FI Channel has announced that it has given a green light to a two-hour movie based on Stargate Atlantis. The SCI FI channel will air the as-yet-untitled film as a world premiere before its release on DVD.

Announcement of the new film follows similar telefilms based on SCI FI’s Battlestar Galactica and two straight-to-DVD Stargate SG-1 movies, Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum.

The Atlantis movie will be written by executive producers Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, who also serve as the series’ show runners.

The movie is set to follow the fifth and final season of Stargate Atlantis in January 2009.

“We’re excited to tell Atlantis stories on a bigger canvas,” said Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, co-creators of SG-1 and Atlantis, in a statement. “The successes of the two original Stargate [direct-to-video] movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise.” Atlantis will air a milestone 100th episode in January 2009

I just hear today that the Sci-Fi channel is going to cancel StarGate Atlantis at the end of its 5th season. Since the show is going to end with a cliffhanger they have green lit a 2 hour StarGate Atlantis made for TV movie. So we have that to look forward too.

Fandemonium publishes new StarGate Atlantis novel

Fandemonium Press has announced the publication of a new Stargate Atlantis book called “Mirror Mirror,” it is the ninth Atlantis novel to be released by the publisher. The novel is written by Sabine C. Bauer, who previously wrote the Stargate SG-1 novels “Trial by Fire” and “Survival of the Fittest.”

StarGate Atlantis Season 5 Episode List Completed

Sci Fi Channel will be showing all of Season Five in 2008. The airing time will change for Stargate Atlantis starting October 10, when the show will be moved from its regular 10pm slot to its new home at 9pm so it will become the lead-in show for Amanda Tapping’s new series Sanctuary, which premieres with a two-hour episode on October 3 at 9pm.

Atlantis Premieres to Better Ratings

Friday’s 5th season premiere of Stargate Atlantis garnered good enough ratings for an early report:

‘Atlantis’ Rises In Ratings

Season-Five Premiere Pulls 1.8 Million Viewers
– Multichannel News
Sci Fi Channel said the Stargate Atlantis season-five premiere—introducing new cast member Robert Picardo—drew 1.8 million total viewers, up 6% over the season-four premiere in September 2007.

Sci Fi said the episode’s 1.05 million viewers ages 25-54 marks a 9% improvement over the season-four premiere and that the household rating of 1.3 was 8% better than the S4 start.

Sci Fi said SGA was the fourth-ranked program for Friday, July 11 among 25-54s and that among males 25-54, Sci Fi won the 10 p.m. ET timeslot among cable networks.

Picardo, as Richard Woolsey, replaces Amanda Tapping as commander of the Atlantis-based Stargate crew in the show.

Tapping, who also starred in predecessor Stargate SG-1, has moved on to oversee a new show on Sci Fi, called Sanctuary. For more and a review of the Atlantis premiere, please click here.

Stargate Atlantis Audio Drama Perchance to Dream Available for Download

The second Atlantis episode in the first season of the new Big Finish Stargate series of audio dramas is currently available for download at the production’s website. The CD for the drama, written by Sally Malcolm and directed by Sharon Gosling.

“Perchance to Dream” is narrated by Paul McGillion and is set during Season Two. The audio play, which also features a musical score, runs for approximately 70 minutes.

The story synopsis: “Doctor Carson Beckett finds himself in an uncomfortable situation when he becomes a patient in his own infirmary. After a disastrous mission, Beckett is brought back to Atlantis with a broken leg – and a bad case of amnesia.

“But that’s the least of his troubles. Cared for by Doctor Gilbert, Beckett watches as a strange affliction overcomes his friends and colleagues. One by one, members of the Atlantis crew are brought in, unconscious and unresponsive yet with no sign of trauma. What’s causing this peculiar illness? And why doesn’t anyone want to hear what Carson has to say about it?”

Fans will be able to download each audio adventure in the six-episode season, along with the CD artwork, for $8.99 (US). The CD is priced at $19.74 + $2.98 shipping (USD) at the website (previous CDs have included exclusive interviews with the starring Stargate actor). Those who buy the CD will be permitted to download the episode from the website at no extra charge.

The next episode in the series will feature Teryl Rothery in the Stargate SG-1 story “Savarna” and is due to be released in August this year.

SciFi Schedules July 11 Premiere for Season 5

The SciFi Channel schedule is showing the premiere of Stargate Atlantis’s Season 5 on Friday, July 11, at 10 pm EDT/PDT. The premiere episode will complete the cliffhanger of Season 4 and is called “Search and Rescue”. Be advised th SciFi Channel has been known to change schedules before, but this is the best info we have available so far.

Luttrell Is Atlantis’ Mom

Rachel Luttrell, who plays Teyla in SCI FI Channel’s original series Stargate Atlantis, told SCI FI Wire that she’s a new mother in real life, as is her character in the coming fifth season, and that presents its own challenges.

Speaking in an interview on the show’s set in Vancouver, Canada, last week, Luttrell said, “Hats off to every single mom and every mother who’s working, because it’s not easy. Everyone’s like, ‘How did you lose the weight?’ Oh, brother! There’s no stop. I run from my trailer to the set. I do the scenes, and then I race back, and I’m bouncing my little guy, and I’m back on set. It’s a lot.”

Luttrell became pregnant last season, and the producers chose to write her pregnancy into the show. As season five opens, both Luttrell and Teyla have new babies and must balance motherhood with demanding jobs. (Spoilers ahead!)

It’s not surprising that Luttrell’s two worlds are starting to overlap. Preparing for an episode in which Teyla physically transforms into a Wraith, Luttrell realized that she would have to nurse her baby while wearing full Wraith prosthetic makeup. She was extremely nervous about it. “I was going to look like a monster,” she said.

Luttrell’s castmates weren’t much help. “I thought it was hilarious,” admitted Joe Flanigan, who plays John Sheppard. “I was giving her a hard time. I was saying, ‘No, your child’s going to be permanently scarred.’”

Atlantis’ Picardo Is Reluctant Chief

Robert Picardo, who joins the regular cast of SCI FI Channel’s original series Stargate Atlantis in the coming fifth season, told SCI FI Wire that he initially had doubts about playing the new base commander. (Spoilers ahead!)

“When I got the phone call, there was a little voice going, ‘Wait a minute,’” Picardo said in an interview on the show’s set in Vancouver, Canada, last week. “You’ve set this guy up as kind of an annoyance, a bit of a prig. And now suddenly he’s the guy in charge?”

The new guy in charge–taking over from the beloved previous commander, Col. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping)–is Picardo’s Richard Woolsey, the craven bureaucrat well known to fans of Atlantis and its predecessor series, Stargate SG-1.

Woolsey’s role up until now has been to butt heads with the other characters and to second-guess their decisions. “He knows the military rule book,” Picardo said. “He knows all the rules about protocol and eliminating collateral damage and acceptable losses and all that. But he doesn’t make decisions. He just comes in and tells you how you screwed up.”

To date, Woolsey has been played largely to comic effect. It makes him an odd choice for command in a genre in which the leader is typically someone like Capt. Kirk. “I thought, if the writers are choosing to do this, it’s for the exact reason to put someone in charge who’s not a born leader and to see how he develops and how he’s accepted,” Picardo said.

Atlantis Focuses On Wraith

The upcoming fifth season of SCI FI Channel’s original series Stargate Atlantis will focus heavily on the Wraith–with a side trip to Las Vegas to commemorate the show’s 100th episode, producers told SCI FI Wire during a visit to the show’s sets in Vancouver, Canada, on May 16. (Spoilers ahead!)

Other key developments: Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) will have her baby in the fifth season. The character became pregnant last season to accommodate Luttrell’s real-life pregnancy. Luttrell has given birth, so her character can follow suit. The baby is delivered on camera by Dr. McKay (David Hewlett). (Inside word is it’s a boy!)

Teyla also sees her abilities get out of hand in an episode in which she touches the mind of a Wraith Queen, which activates her Wraith DNA. According to Luttrell, Teyla “embodies” the Wraith Queen–the actress will appear in full Wraith makeup–and becomes “the leader of an alliance of Wraith.”

Also look for the return of the Wraith-worshipping Satedan Tyre (Mark Dacascos) in an episode in which he captures Ronon (Jason Momoa) and attempts to sacrifice him to the Wraith. Ronon is given so much Wraith enzyme in the episode that he gives in completely to his dark side and apparently does some serious damage to Sheppard (Joe Flanigan).
